ARTIST’S STATEMENT

A fascination with nature and trees has pervaded most of my 30-year career in art.
I attended ceramics courses at college; later studied Chinese brush painting, from
which I learned the subtleties of brushwork and the Chinese philosophy that influences my work. |

My “tree” sculptures began as small covered jars with tiny, one-inch high trees.
Over time, the trees grew larger and larger, finally becoming the main focus of
the piece. I am now expanding on this nature theme with bird and wave motifs.
I have chosen the heron for its elegant look and serene personality. |

The “wave” pieces are inspired by the Japanese master of woodcut prints,
Hokusai, especially his Mt. Fuji wave print. The waves show not only the power of
nature but also its graceful beauty. |
|
I have just introduced a functional pottery line to showcase my brush painting and my
latest inspirations from the Lascaux Cave paintings. I am using hand-thrown pieces,
bowls, covered jars, tea bowls, and mugs decorated with my brush paintings, using
the traditional bamboo, plum blossom, chrysanthemum, and grass orchid of the four
season’s. |

For my “cave painting” inspired pieces, I am texturing slabs of clay and
forming them into boxes that allow me to use as canvases for my painting. These are
then glazed and fired. Some of these boxes are also assembled into lamp bases. |

I currently exhibit my work at galleries throughout the United States, and at fine art
shows like the Sausalito Art Festival and the Scottsdale Celebration of Fine Arts.
I have been featured on a television segment for HGTV, on the Carol Duvall show. |
